Taking Care Of Your Dog’s Health: When To Go To The Veterinarian Hospital

Taking care of your dog's health can sometimes seem easy and other times seem incredibly confusing and complicated. It can be difficult to know when you should deal with issues at home and when you should head to the veterinary hospital to have your dog checked out and taken care of by a professional. To take away some of that confusion, here are a few times when you should definitely take your dog to the vet hospital.

They Have a Seizure

One of the instances when you should take your dog to the veterinarian hospital immediately is if they have a seizure. Seizures can present in different ways depending on the severity of the seizure. Sometimes, it can seem like your dog just zones out and their eyes glaze over. They may be very still or seem to be shaking just slightly. This is a mild seizure, but it should be cause for alarm regardless.

Grand mal seizures in dogs are more severe and even more disturbing to witness. Your dog may collapse and stiffen up and start shaking and twitching uncontrollably. These seizures can last for several minutes and leave your dog extremely weak and disoriented after the fact. Go to the vet hospital right away for grand mal seizures. These can be signs of major health issues and can recur if not treated and dealt with properly.

They Are Unable to Walk

If your dog is suddenly unable to walk or to lift themselves off the ground from laying down, a trip to the veterinary hospital is definitely in order. Sudden lameness in dogs could be from a progressive disorder like degenerative disc disease. It can also be from an acute injury or even the result of a reaction to a tick bite.

The veterinarian at the vet hospital will examine your dog thoroughly and do x-rays to help determine what is causing the lameness. They will then provide pain medications and other treatments for your dog as needed.

They Stop Eating

If your dog just stops eating for more than a day or so, you have a problem on your hands. Dogs need to eat regularly to maintain their health and energy. When they stop eating, they could have a stomach bug or something more serious like diabetes or other major health conditions.

These are just a few of the times when you should take your dog to the vet hospital. If you notice any of these issues in your dog, do not hesitate to seek veterinary care immediately.
